Yes, Rocket Arena is dead, and finding full lobbies is all but impossible outside of prearranged matches as of February 2022, even with cross-play enabled, it can take upwards of 5 minutes to find even two players in the same lobby, the minimum required to start a game. TLDR: As of February 2022, Rocket Arena is unlikely to receive further updates and will likely be sunset towards the end of 2022, unless increased player activity warrants a stay of execution. To survive, Rocket Arena needed to be made as widely available as possible, which required it to be accessible by those without the means or desire to make online purchases.įreemium games survive financially due to the 10% of players who purchase cosmetic items however, they thrive due to the remaining 90% of players who never spend a penny on the game.įree players ensure that matchmaking is viable and that the 10% of players who support the game financially have a reason to continue “paying and playing”, and by excluding this key demographic, Rocket Arena all but sealed its fate right from the start. Rocket Arena needed to be free2play to survive not even a price reduction to $1 would not ensure its survival or delay its inevitable demise. Unfortunately for Rocket Arena, no matter how much the developers slashed the retail price or how many extra cosmetics they added to the base game (further devaluing the Mythic Edition), it would never be enough to ensure Rocket Arena’s survival, in-fact it would do little but cement its “dead game” status in the eyes of the gaming community. What makes the failure of Rocket Arena so unfortunate is that at its core, it was an excellent game with likeable characters, fun gameplay and a gorgeous aesthetic that would appeal to fans of Overwatch, Paladins and Fortnite, three titles which have enjoyed continued success for over four years.
